OUR MISSION

TOOLS 🛠️ TRANSPARENCY 🪟 TRUST 🤝

🐠

At Sturgeon Law, our mission is simple: to give you as many resources as we possibly can — most of them at no cost — to help you better understand the law and make informed decisions for yourself and your loved ones.

Let's not go any further without emphasizing that just reading our site or sending us a message does not create an attorney–client relationship. So please do not send us confidential or time-sensitive information unless and until we’ve formally agreed to represent you.

That being said, the guides, checklists, and other tools we offer on this site are intended to empower you, responsibly. This is a two-way street:

  • For our part, we take our professional boundaries and responsibilities seriously. We are licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and we can only represent clients where — and in the manner — the law allows.
  • For your part, the information on this site is meant to be helpful and educational, but it is not legal advice, and you should not blindly absorb it as such. Every situation is unique, and if you need advice about your specific circumstances, the right move is to speak directly with a licensed attorney in your jurisdiction.

To be clear, if you live outside of Virginia, certain services may still available to you. For example, trusts that are drafted under Virginia law and administered in Virginia are valid and enforceable under Virginia law, regardless of where the grantor/settlor is domiciled. In other words, no matter where you live, you can properly establish a valid trust in Virginia.

There are plenty of nuances and exceptions when it comes to cross-border legal practice, and we won’t get into all of them here. For now, the main takeaway is that, first and foremost, we are equally committed to the following guiding principles:

  • To openly share practical resources that anyone can access and use to better understand the law, and thus better prepare themselves (and their loved ones) for various possibilities and eventualities in life; and
  • To faithfully and competently represent clients who we are duly licensed to serve, always within the ethical and professional rules of our practice.

In short, we’re here to help — by educating broadly, serving directly where we can, and always respecting the limits of the law.
